Flowdayz vs Fabulous: an honest comparison

A side-by-side comparison of Fabulous and Flowdayz. How each works, what each costs, what happens on a day you miss, and where Fabulous is the better choice.

The Flowdayz wordmark beside the name Fabulous, divided by a rule, under the words An honest comparison, over a dim office desk crossed by one shaft of light.

Fabulous and Flowdayz both promise to change your mornings, and they get compared often enough that a direct answer is useful. This is that comparison, written by the people who build Flowdayz, which is worth knowing before you weigh anything below.

The two apps disagree about how much structure to hand you. Fabulous hands you a program and asks you to keep pace with it. Flowdayz hands you one thing, sized to the day you are actually having, and nothing else.

How Fabulous works

Fabulous was incubated in Duke University's Center for Advanced Hindsight, with behavioural economist Dan Ariely advising, and that pedigree shows in the product rather than just the marketing copy.

Its central feature is the Journey: a structured, multi-week program that introduces one habit at a time and builds toward a fuller routine as the weeks pass. Around that sit a genuinely deep library of coaching audio grouped by topic, anxiety, productivity, self-care, journaling and gratitude prompts, breathing exercises, and community challenges you can join for shared motivation. Fabulous's own site states it has "helped 37M people build healthier and happier lives."

It is a lot of app, built by people who take the underlying science seriously. That is precisely why the two products suit different people.

How Flowdayz works

Flowdayz is a feel good app. You learn what actually makes you feel good and what gets you into flow, usually the smallest things, and the app helps you get there every day. It starts from the opposite assumption: that you already have reasons, and the problem is that your plans are calibrated to a version of your day that does not exist.

You answer a short set of questions once. It generates a routine of daily anchors and weekly blocks placed around your actual schedule, then shows one action at a time and gets out of the way. There is no program to keep pace with, no library to work through, and no comparison to anyone else.

What you are handed each day

This is the difference that outlasts the rest of the feature list.

A Journey keeps its own pace, whichever week you are actually having. It introduces the next habit in sequence because the calendar has turned, not because your Tuesday has room for it. For a lot of people that structure is exactly the point, a program that keeps building is motivating in its own right. For someone whose week just got harder, a program that does not know that is one more thing running ahead of them.

Flowdayz does the opposite by design. When a category keeps getting missed, it does not increase pressure, it reduces the size of the ask and says that it has. There is nothing to fall behind on, because nothing was ever scheduled ahead of what your day could hold.

What happens on a day you miss

Fabulous's own help centre is direct about this, in a support article addressing why a streak count looks wrong: streaks reset to zero if you miss a day of completing at least one routine.

The same fortnight, counted twice. A streak says three days, because it counts only the run since the last missed day. A record says twelve, because missed days simply are not counted.

Both readings above describe the same fourteen days: twelve kept, two missed. A streak reports three. A cumulative record reports twelve. Flowdayz stores the second version, deliberately. Nothing resets, and a missed day is never subtracted from what came before it.

How much of your attention each one wants

An independently published review of Fabulous, run by a licensed-therapist review site, reports the experience directly: notification and reminder timing can be adjusted for morning, afternoon and evening rituals, but "there are several other random notifications and emails from the app throughout the day," and the reviewer says they had "not figured out a way to disable these notifications without silencing all notifications." That is reported as true of paying subscribers, not only the free tier.

Flowdayz sends one daily reminder. No coaching pushes, no promotional messages, nothing to silence because there is nothing else sending.

Neither approach is dishonest. A program built to deepen over weeks has a real reason to stay in touch often. The question worth asking yourself is which kind of attention you actually want an app claiming.

Where Fabulous is the better choice

When you want the next step decided for you. A Journey removes the question of what to do this week by answering it in advance. Flowdayz never does this. It resizes to your day, but it never hands you a fixed multi-week curriculum.

When you want a library to actually explore. Coaching audio on real topics, journaling, breathing exercises, community challenges. Flowdayz has none of this; it plans one action and stops.

When a free tier matters. Fabulous's core is usable without paying. Flowdayz has a seven day trial and then one paid price, with no free tier behind it.

Fabulous also has real scale behind it: roughly 89,000 App Store ratings averaging 4.4, evidence the approach works for a great many people.

Where Flowdayz is the better choice

If a missed day currently produces a small spike of dread, the mechanism causing it is a resetting counter, and removing the counter removes the dread. If you have quietly stopped opening an app because keeping pace with its program became its own task, that is the specific failure Flowdayz is built around.

It also suits people who have decided their phone should ask for less of them, not more. One reminder, one action, then nothing further arriving.

What Flowdayz does not have

Stated plainly, because these are real and worth weighing.

  • No free tier. Seven days, then paid. Fabulous's core is genuinely usable without paying.
  • No coaching library. No audio sessions, no guided journaling, no breathing exercises. Flowdayz plans actions; it does not supply content to work through.
  • No community. No challenges, no shared goals, no groups.
  • Fewer platforms. iPhone and Android only, with no desktop companion.

Price

Fabulous's own App Store listing shows premium tiers from $16.99 to $59.99 depending on plan and region, and one independent review cites $39.99 a year for the standard annual plan. Genuinely variable, and that instability is itself worth knowing rather than smoothing into one number. It also has a usable free tier underneath all of that.

Flowdayz is one price in one currency: $49 a year, which is about $4 a month, or $8 monthly if you would rather not commit to a year. A seven day trial comes first, and the renewal date and amount are both shown before you confirm.

What Flowdayz does not include is a free tier, and for some people that alone settles it in Fabulous's favour.

Decide it in twenty seconds

Which one fits you

Tick everything that genuinely matters to you. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the answer moves as you go.

Pick a few above and this will tell you which one to try, including the times that is not Flowdayz.

Three questions that decide it

  1. Do you want the next step decided for you, or sized to the day you are having? Fabulous answers that question for you, weeks in advance. Flowdayz answers it fresh, every day.
  2. Do you want a library to explore, or one thing and nothing else? Fabulous's coaching content is genuinely deep. Flowdayz has none of it on purpose.
  3. When you miss a day, is your first feeling guilt? If yes, a resetting streak will sharpen that feeling, whatever the app's tone. A record that only ever adds is the plainer fix.

If the honest answers point to Fabulous, use Fabulous. A comparison that concluded otherwise every time would not be worth reading.

Questions people actually ask

Is Fabulous worth it?
For a lot of people, yes, particularly if a guided multi-week program genuinely suits how you like to build habits. It has a free tier to try first, real behavioural-science pedigree (incubated at Duke University's Center for Advanced Hindsight, advised by Dan Ariely), and a deep library of coaching audio, journaling and breathing exercises. The most consistent complaint, reported independently by reviewers, is volume, notifications and promotional messages that are difficult to fully turn off even as a paying subscriber.
Does Fabulous use streaks that reset?
Yes. Fabulous's own help centre states it plainly, streaks reset to zero if you miss a day of completing at least one routine. If a broken streak is what makes you stop opening a habit app altogether, that mechanic is worth weighing before committing to the program built on top of it.
What is the best Fabulous alternative if I want fewer notifications?
Judge candidates on what actually arrives in your notification centre over a real week, not on how calm the marketing sounds. One independently published review of Fabulous reports daily prompts plus other notifications and emails the reviewer could not find a way to turn off without silencing everything. Flowdayz sends a single daily reminder and nothing else.
How much does Fabulous cost compared to Flowdayz?
Fabulous's own App Store listing shows premium tiers ranging from $16.99 to $59.99 depending on plan and region, with one independent review citing $39.99 a year for its standard premium plan. Flowdayz has no free tier and one price everywhere, $49 a year or $8 monthly, after a seven day trial.
Does Fabulous have a desktop app?
Yes, a companion Mac and Windows app alongside the phone app, according to Fabulous's own site. Flowdayz runs on iPhone and Android only.
